It could have just been men with speedos and been fine, but the way those men are portrayed emotionally together suggests more than just friendship without ever going the final step. Yet, in a worse way, it is queerbaiting in every corner. In a way, it is a bit progressive because it is fan service for the (straight) female gaze instead of the male’s like most fan service in anime. Freeįree is a series that was made for the fangirls. They are all claimed as never more than friends, but that certainly isn’t what we see on screen. Perhaps even Kyouko’s relationship with Mami as well, to some degree. There is Homura’s dedication to saving Madoka as well as Kyouko’s relationship with Sayaka. There are many degrees of queerbaiting in Madoka Magica, and it is all purely for the shippers. Ultimately, they both have their own heterosexual partners. However, later one Nana develops a certain dependence on the other emotionally, and her feelings are enhanced to a degree that suggests that those feelings are something more. Though different, they bond deeply as they struggle through their life. It follows two very different girls named Nana who happen to move into the same apartment. While it doesn’t start off as such, Nana becomes one of the most infamous queerbaiting anime series of all time.
